Nowadays, flagship AI models can readily solve many graduate-level mathematics problems. The purpose of homework assignments, however, is not simply to evaluate the correctness of submitted solutions. Rather, the assignments are intended to provide a checklist of problems that are essential to developing a solid understanding of the course material.
Students should learn how to use AI tools effectively, but AI should not do all the thinking for you. In particular, the following policy applies to the use of AI in homework assignments.
Use of AI Tools
AI tools may be used to help you understand concepts, check calculations, or explore possible approaches. They may not be used to produce work that you submit as your own.
Verification
All assignments will be graded normally during the semester. However, I reserve the right to review any submitted work for authenticity before the final exam. If I determine that a submission was generated directly by AI, the assignment may be recorded as a zero in the final course grade, even if it received a normal grade when it was originally submitted.
Appeals
If you believe that an assignment has been incorrectly recorded as a zero, you may appeal the decision. The appeal process and the criteria used to evaluate an appeal are at the discretion of the instructor. It is your responsibility to provide sufficient evidence to convince me that the submitted work was not generated by AI.
